ADS Newsletter
April 17th, 2025
Hello Acton Families,
A reminder, as described in last week’s newsletter, we will be bringing lunch into the school. Lunch options are provided by our local restauranteurs and we will begin by adding pizza slices on Thursday for our secondary students. Our elementary students already have pizza Thursday so we are expanding the order to include the whole school. Use schoolcashonline to place your order for your secondary student(s). Going forward we hope to offer fish and chips, pitas, and sub sandwiches. Our current contract with the cafeteria management will end at the conclusion of this school year so we are moving to this model for all of next year as well. This will prevent inconsistencies in service for our students and make sure tummies are full.
Something Fun–The CBC will be filming their live stand-up comedy TV show ‘Still Standing” in our school on Thursday, May 22nd and Friday, May 23rd. They will use our cafeteria for the filming. More details to follow. Their filming will be contained and the privacy of our staff and students who do not want to be caught on film will be respected. This is a fun way to promote our beautiful school!
Earth Day is the Tuesday back after the long weekend and your students will have a chance to pay it forward and clean up their schoolyard and community. Weather pending. Dress appropriately. Spring cleaning here we come!
Friday, April 25th mid-term report cards come out for the secondary students–Moms and Dads look for the email!
Happy Easter to all our families who celebrate and a very happy long weekend to all!
Acton District School has been honored with the Environmental Awareness Award at the 2025 Friends of the Credit Conservation Awards, presented by Credit Valley Conservation (CVC). This honour recognizes individuals and groups that connect communities with nature through education and outreach, promoting environmental awareness, appreciation, and action.
Our commitment to fostering environmental stewardship among students and the broader community has significantly contributed to enhancing environmental awareness in the catchment of Acton District. By integrating environmental education into our curriculum and organizing community outreach programs, our school has inspired action towards a more sustainable future.

Nature journals used to connect with the land and understand human impact on the environment;
Reading Braiding Sweetgrass to learn Indigenous perspectives on treating Earth and all living things as kin;
Completed Inquiry Project, where students connected with local professionals to explore environmental impacts in Acton;
Planned and executed the 2nd annual Forest Festival for feeder schools;

Secondary Foods Classes utilize indoor growing station;
Secondary Geography classes frequently plant trees in conjunction with CVC;
The Bearcat Recycle Rack (part of the ICT SHSM program) reclaims gently used fashion and resells it in an online store.
The Grade 12 Leadership class running the annual Halton Forest Festival for grade 4 students.
Technology Happenings
Grade 10, 11 and 12 Technological Design students have been busy designing CO2 dragster/formula one cars in the school's new lab! We now have 16 brand new computers to run Fusion 360 (Mechanical design cloud based program) and Revit (Architectural design program). The school also received 2 new 3D printers that the students used to manufacture their cars. We have also received a new CNC 3 axis router table that students will be using this semester to manufacture parts/projects. In secondary school, any absence that is longer than 3 consecutive days is referred to as an extended absence. If you know that your student will be away for more than 3 consecutive school days, please print this Planned Absence Form and fill it in with the information requested 2 weeks prior to the planned absence (hard copies are available in the office). Students should ask their parent/guardian and teachers to fill in the form and once it is complete, the form should be handed in at the main office. The Vice Principal will then review the form and it will be given to the attendance Administrative Assistant for attendance to be entered (absences longer than 3 days are not able to be entered into School Messenger by parents). Halton Learning Foundation (HLF) Month is here! April 2025 is the second annual HLF Month and HDSB schools and community members are coming together to help raise awareness and funds for the financial support, provided by HLF, that many HDSB students need to fully engage in learning such as school supplies, food and clothing.
Each year, HLF supports more than 3,000 students in the HDSB by providing financial support that removes educational barriers and providing the essential resources students need to focus on schoolwork and thrive to their full potential. HLF’s goal is to ensure that they can continue to say ‘yes’ to every request for support received.
Families can learn more about the Halton Learning Foundation and how to support HLF Month by visiting the HLF Month webpage on the HLF website (haltonlearningfoundation.ca).
