What does School Council Do?

Advisory Role: Through communications with the principal, Halton School Board representative and provincial government we are able to voice concerns and provide input for educational improvement in our school, as well as at the regional and provincial levels.

Improve Student Achievement: By encouraging a nourishing school environment through networking of its members, the council hopes to empower students to achieve their greatest potential.

Accountability: Enhance the accountability of the education system to parents.

Composition of the School Council

The composition of the school council. Council members are elected for a term that lasts from the first meeting of one school year to the first meeting of the next.

Ideally, each council will reflect the diversity of its school community. Parents and guardians must form the majority of members on the council. All members may bring before the council the issues and concerns of the groups that they represent and provide links to those groups.

Ontario Regulation 612/00 establishes that a school council will consist of the following members:  a majority of parents, as specified in a bylaw of the school council or by the board if such a bylaw does not exist!
